When you come to our office in Delray Beach, we maintain a comfortable environment in which you feel at ease from the moment you walk in, to when you book your next appointment with us.

During this time, we want to hear your story and learn all the ways psoriasis has affected your life. This way, we can craft a personalized treatment plan that reflects your skin care needs and seeks to make living with psoriasis manageable. Although each patient is different, psoriasis treatments tend to overlap from time to time. We may recommend you undergo one or more of these types of care:

  • Topical corticosteroids: The purpose of this therapy is to treat mild to moderate cases of psoriasis that occur in skin folds, on the scalp, or in patches that cover wide areas. We can prescribe them as a lotion, foam, gel, spray, or shampoo.
  • Vitamin D analog cream: This medicine aims to slow cell growth. We may prescribe it on its own or pair it with other treatments.
  • Salicylic acid solutions: Salicylic acid shampoo can help decrease the scaly skin that occurs on the scalp. You may use it in conjunction with other medications so the scalp can easily absorb them better.
  • Calcineurin inhibitors: This topical treatment can calm the itchy and scaly skin in sensitive areas, especially around the eyes.
  • Coal tar: Coal tar in the form of oil, cream, or shampoo can alleviate itching, scaling, and overall inflammation. When you apply it, make sure you wear clothes you don’t care for since it can stain them and has a strong scent.
  • Oral medications: Sometimes, our physicians prescribe oral medications to slow cell growth and alleviate inflammation.
  • Light therapy: Your doctor may prescribe you to undergo light therapy if you suffer from moderate to severe psoriasis. Here, the affected areas of skin are exposed to light—natural or artificial—in controlled increments. You generally must go through several sessions of light therapy for it to be effective. Types of light therapy we might offer you include sunlight, UVB broadband, or UVB narrowband.

If at any point you no longer feel comfortable undergoing a certain treatment due to poor side effects, you don’t feel like it’s working for you, or just want to explore other options, communicate that to your doctor. From there, we can adjust your plan so you can feel at peace moving forward.

Types
Types of Psoriasis

Psoriasis comes in different forms and manifests various symptoms.

  • Plaque psoriasis: This is the most common type of psoriasis, causing dry, itchy, and scaly patches of skin.
  • Inverse psoriasis: This type of psoriasis usually affects skin folds, particularly in the breasts, buttocks, and groin. Patients are more likely to experience a flare-up from sweating, friction, or fungal infection.
  • Guttate psoriasis: Children and young adults generally suffer from guttate psoriasis after a bacterial infection, like strep throat. It typically manifests through small, drop-shaped spots that cover the arms, legs, or trunk.

  • Nail psoriasis: Some people have psoriasis around the finger and toenails, leading to discoloration, pitting, abnormal growth, or the nail separating from the nail bed. In the most severe cases, the nail disintegrates.
  • Pustular psoriasis: A rare type of psoriasis, pus-filled blisters cover the soles or palms.
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis: The most uncommon form of psoriasis, an itchy, burning, or peeling rash can cover the whole body.

We invite you to come to our office once your condition causes discomfort, becomes widespread, makes you concerned about the way you look, or doesn’t improve with time or home remedies.

Risk
Risk Factors
We don’t know the exact cause of psoriasis, but there does seem to be certain factors, like smoking and family history, that heighten the risk of suffering from it. Once you’re diagnosed with psoriasis, you may be more likely to develop health conditions such as:
Obesity
High blood pressure
Celiac disease
Crohn’s disease
Type 2 diabetes
Skin discoloration
Eye conditions
Depression
The risk of suffering from other diseases on top of psoriasis is why it is crucial to live a healthy lifestyle. We encourage you to maintain a healthy weight, be active, eat well, and go outside as much as possible.
